Em 11 de março de 2011, Fukushima registra o pior acidente nuclear da história, levando a uma liberação significativa de radionuclídeos no meio ambiente. As medidas radiológicas permitiram reconstruir as quatro principais seqüências de contaminação, identificando as prováveis trajetórias das plumas radioativas associadas aos dados de precipitação para explicar as áreas de deposição. Mais de 99% da atividade de liberação na atmosfera foi devido a radionuclídeos altamente voláteis, como I, Te, Cs, Xe, Kr, a maioria dos quais estão dispersos no Oceano Pacífico. O impacto social também é uma grande preocupação; Estima-se que haja um aumento do risco de câncer de tireóide de início tardio devido à exposição à radiação com liberação de iodo, bem como diminuição da taxa de natalidade. Indivíduos com menos de 18 anos na época do acidente foram examinados com ultra-sonografia, revelando alta taxa de detecção de câncer de tireoide em jovens. No entanto, é difícil ou impossível distinguir o câncer de tireóide induzido por radiação do câncer de tireoide espontâneo. O Objetivo deste artigo é abordar algumas consequências para o meio ambiente e para a sociedade após o acidente nuclear de Fukushima através de uma revisão de estudos de monitoramento da deposição dos principais radionuclídeos liberados na atmosfera e publicações científicas sobre os últimos resultados do câncer de tireoide e baixa taxa de natalidade, após o acidente nuclear da usina de Fukushima.
